Keel removal / refitting
Frequently, the removal of a yachts keel follows an unplanned grounding or other impact. This is done to allow access for inspection and subsequent repairs to any damaged laminate structure in the hull and may be covered by an insurance policy. There are other reasons for removing a keel such as inspection or replacement of keel bolts, modification or exchange of the keel itself and re-sealing the hull / keel join due to water ingress.
We have the experience and machinery to carry out this process with a great degree of control. We also have a custom cradle in which to place the hull once the keel has been removed, allowing free and safe access under the hull for extensive inspection and repairs where necessary.
When it comes to refitting the keel, we use the most advanced bedding compounds and sealants and ensure all the keel bolts / studs are correctly and evenly tightened. There is often an extended curing time for bedding compounds and this must be respected to ensure complete integrity. We will inspect all keel bolts for signs of water ingress during the launch process to ensure your complete peace of mind.
